New York City, Off Algorithm
An Insider's Guide to the Spots Worth Knowing
by Allison Luton

If you’re getting your NYC recommendations from TikTok, there's a good chance you're waiting in lines longer than Disney World for an aggressively average coffee, frozen yogurt, or sandwich. And hey, if that's your thing, who am I to judge? It's just not how I’d spend a day in New York.
After more than ten years in the city, I've found that some of my most memorable experiences rarely show up on a "Top 10 Things to Do in NYC" list.
These are the places I find myself recommending over and over again. Some are institutions, some are slightly random, and until now, none require standing in line for an hour to recreate someone else's video.
For a Night Out You'll Actually Remember | Don't Tell Mama
Perhaps one of the few redeeming parts of Hell's Kitchen, Don't Tell Mama somehow manages to feel like one of New York's best-kept secrets despite being surrounded by tourists.
Part piano bar and part cabaret venue, it's the kind of place where Broadway performers, neighborhood regulars, and first-timers all end up singing together by the end of the night. One minute someone is performing a show tune. The next minute the entire room is screaming the words to Britney Spears.
The drinks are strong, the crowd is fun, and everyone leaves in a better mood than they arrived, which is absolutely a win.
For the Perfect Dinner | Sfoglia
There are many excellent Italian restaurants in New York, but Sfoglia is the one I keep returning to.
Tucked away on a quiet Upper East Side block, it feels intimate without being precious and charming without trying too hard. It works equally well for a date night, birthday dinner, catching up with friends, or a random Wednesday when you simply want a really good meal.
My go-to move is to start with a dirty martini, split the bolognese, and order the roast chicken for the table. I've also spotted Drew Barrymore there, which somehow feels exactly right.
For Something Different | Rock Star Crystals
New York is one of the few cities where you can walk in looking for a gift and leave convinced a crystal might actually change your life. Rock Star Crystals is one of those places that's fun regardless of how seriously you take it.
The selection is massive, the staff genuinely know their stuff, and it's the kind of store where you can easily lose an hour browsing. Whether you're crystal curious or fully committed, it's worth a stop.
For a Conversation Starter | Aura Readings at Magic Jewelry
If you're looking for an activity that falls somewhere between entertainment, self discovery, and a very New York experience, book an aura reading.
Located in Chinatown, Magic Jewelry photographs your aura and walks you through what all those colors supposedly mean. Whether you believe every word or not is beside the point. You'll leave with a photo, a story, and enough material to carry brunch conversation for the rest of the day.
For a Very New York Evening | The Roxy Hotel
Some of my favorite nights in New York start at The Roxy.
The formula is simple: catch a movie or one of the many talks and special events at Roxy Cinema, then head downstairs to The Django for live jazz.
Together they create the kind of evening that reminds you why New York is still New York. A little glamorous, a little old-school, and somehow always more memorable than whatever plans you thought you were going to make.
Beyond the Algorithm
The best parts of New York have never been dictated by an algorithm. They're the places people tell their friends about. The places they return to over and over again. The places that become part of their version of the city.
These are a few of mine. They are not necessarily hidden or trendy. Just consistently good. And in New York, that's usually the highest compliment possible.
